La Génisse, la Chèvre, et la Brebis en société avec le Lion

 

La Génisse, la Chèvre, et leur soeur la Brebis,
Avec un fier Lion, seigneur du voisinage,
Firent société, dit-on, au temps jadis,
Et mirent en commun le gain et le dommage.
Dans les lacs de la Chèvre un Cerf se trouva pris.
Vers ses associés aussitôt elle envoie.
Eux venus, le Lion par ses ongles compta*,
Et dit : "Nous sommes quatre à partager la proie. "
Puis en autant de parts le Cerf il dépeça ;
Prit pour lui la première en qualité de Sire :
"Elle doit être à moi, dit-il ; et la raison,
C'est que je m'appelle Lion :
A cela l'on n'a rien à dire.
La seconde, par droit, me doit échoir encor :
Ce droit, vous le savez, c'est le droit du plus fort
Comme le plus vaillant, je prétends la troisième.
Si quelqu'une de vous touche à la quatrième,
Je l'étranglerai tout d'abord. "

The Wolf and the Dog.

 

The heifer, the goat, and their sister the sheep,
Compacted their earnings in common to keep,
'Tis said, in time past, with a lion, who sway'd
Full lordship o'er neighbours, of whatever grade.
The goat, as it happen'd, a stag having snared,
Sent off to the rest, that the beast might be shared.
All gather'd; the lion first counts on his claws,
And says, 'We'll proceed to divide with our paws
The stag into pieces, as fix'd by our laws.'
This done, he announces part first as his own;
''Tis mine,' he says, 'truly, as lion alone.'
To such a decision there's nought to be said,
As he who has made it is doubtless the head.
'Well, also, the second to me should belong;
'Tis mine, be it known, by the right of the strong.
Again, as the bravest, the third must be mine.
To touch but the fourth whoso maketh a sign,
I'll choke him to death

expression, _la part du lion_, and its English equivalent, the
"lion's share."

VI - La Mucca, la Capra e la Pecora in società col Leone.

 

Si narra che una volta stringesser comunella
la Pecora, la Mucca, la Capra lor sorella,
col gran signor del luogo che detto era Leone,
a questa condizione:
che ognun insieme i danni e gli utili mettesse.
Ben stabiliti i patti avvenne che cadesse
un cervo nella fossa un dì della capretta,
che onesta manda a chiedere i suoi compagni in fretta.

Giunto il Leone, esclama: - Faremo quattro parti -.
E subito coll'unghie straccia la bestia in quarti.
La prima se la piglia e ciò per la ragione
ch'egli è Messer Leone.
- Un'altra parte - aggiunge, - ancor spettami in sorte
perché sono il più forte.
La terza me la piglio perché sono il Leone,
e se la quarta qualcuno osasse contrastarmi
lo mangio in un boccone -.
