Le Cheval et l'Ane.

 

En ce monde il se faut l'un l'autre secourir.
Si ton voisin vient à mourir,
C'est sur toi que le fardeau tombe.
Un Ane accompagnait un Cheval peu courtois,
Celui-ci ne portant que son simple harnois,
Et le pauvre Baudet si chargé qu'il succombe.
Il pria le Cheval de l'aider quelque peu :
Autrement il mourrait devant qu'être à la ville.
La prière, dit-il, n'en est pas incivile :
Moitié de ce fardeau ne vous sera que jeu.
Le Cheval refusa, fit une pétarade :
Tant qu'il vit sous le faix mourir son camarade,
Et reconnut qu'il avait tort.
Du Baudet, en cette aventure,
On lui fit porter la voiture,
Et la peau

In such a world, all men, of every grade,
Should each the other kindly aid;
For, if beneath misfortune's goad
A neighbour falls, on you will fall his load.

There jogg'd in company an ass and horse;
Nought but his harness did the last endorse;
The other bore a load that crush'd him down,
And begg'd the horse a little help to give,
Or otherwise he could not reach the town.
'This prayer,' said he, 'is civil, I believe;
One half this burden you would scarcely feel.'
The horse refused, flung up a scornful heel,
And saw his comrade die beneath the weight:--
And saw his wrong too late;
For on his own proud back
They put the ass's pack,
And over that, beside,
They put the ass's hide.

Il Cavallo e l'Asino.

 

Il suo fardel di guai
lascia chi muore a quel che resta: ebbene
aiutarci l'un l'altro ci conviene.

Un Asino fea scorta ad un Cavallo,
ch'era alquanto egoista di natura,
e mentre l'un crepava sotto il peso
del suo grosso fardello,
non avea l'altro che la bardatura.

- Aiutami, fratello, -
disse l'Asino, - o qui casco disteso
prima ancora di giungere alla mèta.
La preghiera non è troppo indiscreta,
perché metà per uno
non fa mal a nessuno -.
Il Cavallo, del cul fatta trombetta,
che non vuole a rispondere si affretta.

E l'Asino morì, povera bestia!
Il Superbo comprese il suo gran torto,
quand'ebbe la molestia
di portare egli solo, insieme al carico,
la pelle anche del morto.
