Le Singe avec le Léopard
Gagnaient de l'argent à la foire :
Ils affichaient chacun à part.
L'un d'eux disait : Messieurs, mon mérite et ma gloire
Sont connus en bon lieu ; le Roi m'a voulu voir ;
Et, si je meurs, il veut avoir
Un manchon de ma peau ; tant elle est bigarrée,
Pleine de taches, marquetée,
Et vergetée, et mouchetée.
La bigarrure plaît ; partant chacun le vit.
Mais ce fut bientôt fait, bientôt chacun sortit.
Le Singe de sa part disait : Venez de grâce,
Venez, Messieurs. Je fais cent tours de passe-passe.
Cette diversité dont on vous parle tant,
Mon voisin Léopard l'a sur soi seulement ;
Moi, je l'ai dans l'esprit : votre serviteur Gille,
Cousin et gendre de Bertrand,
Singe du Pape en son vivant,
Tout fraîchement en cette ville
Arrive en trois bateaux exprès pour vous parler ;
Car il parle, on l'entend ; il sait danser, baller,
Faire des tours de toute sorte,
Passer en des cerceaux ; et le tout pour six blancs !
Non, Messieurs, pour un sou ; si vous n'êtes contents,
Nous rendrons à chacun son argent à la porte.
Le Singe avait raison : ce n'est pas sur l'habit
Que la diversité me plaît, c'est dans l'esprit :
L'une fournit toujours des choses agréables ;
L'autre en moins d'un moment lasse les regardants.
Oh ! que de grands seigneurs, au Léopard semblables,
N'ont que l'habit pour tous talents !

A monkey and a leopard were
The rivals at a country fair.
Each advertised his own attractions.
Said one, 'Good sirs, the highest place
My merit knows; for, of his grace,
The king hath seen me face to face;
And, judging by his looks and actions,
I gave the best of satisfactions.
When I am dead, 'tis plain enough,
My skin will make his royal muff.
So richly is it streak'd and spotted,
So delicately waved and dotted,
Its various beauty cannot fail to please.'
And, thus invited, everybody sees;
But soon they see, and soon depart.
The monkey's show-bill to the mart
His merits thus sets forth the while,
All in his own peculiar style:--
'Come, gentlemen, I pray you, come;
In magic arts I am at home.
The whole variety in which
My neighbour boasts himself so rich,
Is to his simple skin confined,
While mine is living in the mind.
Your humble servant, Monsieur Gille,
The son-in-law to Tickleville,
Pope's monkey, and of great renown,
Is now just freshly come to town,
Arrived in three bateaux, express,
Your worships to address;
For he can speak, you understand;
Can dance, and practise sleight-of-hand;
Can jump through hoops, and balance sticks;
In short, can do a thousand tricks;
And all for blancos six--[4]
Not, messieurs, for a sou.
And, if you think the price won't do,
When you have seen, then he'll restore
Each man his money at the door.'

The ape was not to reason blind;
For who in wealth of dress can find
Such charms as dwell in wealth of mind?
One meets our ever-new desires,
The other in a moment tires.

Alas! how many lords there are,
Of mighty sway and lofty mien,
Who, like this leopard at the fair,
Show all their talents on the skin!

La Scimmia e il Leopardo.

 

In due tende con grandi cartelloni
alla fiera faceano affari d'oro
la Scimmia e il Leopardo.
- Eccomi a loro, -
dicea costui. - Signori, io son quel celebre
artista, di cui parla tutto il mondo:
e la mia pelle
gaietta, maculata sopra e sotto
a nodi ed a rotelle,
sì piacque al re, che alla mia morte, ha detto,
vuol farne uno stupendo manicotto -.

La gente accorre, ammira,
fa la bestia sul volgo un certo effetto,
ma guardata una volta,
ognuno si ritira.

Nell'altra tenda intanto anche la Scimmia
annuncia i suoi miracoli.
- Entrin, signori, e vedano che smorfie!
Il mio vicin non ha
la grande varietà
che nel pel ricamato a geroglifi.
Ma la Scimmia, signori, ha nello spirito
l'arte che ridere
la gente fa.
Bertuccina nipote di Bertuccia,
rival di Scaramuccia,
Scimmia Cesarea,
in barca arriva, in carrozzino, a piè,
per far piacere
e per rispondere
a chi l'interroga.

Ella nel cerchio
entra e si snoda
e balla e parla e ascolta e ride e canta,
non per quaranta
né per cinquanta
soldi o per cento,
ma per la misera
moneta di un baiocco, e a chi par caro
alla porta si rende il suo denaro -.

Avea ragion la Scimmia. E che m'importa
se alcun è ricco e stupido
nell'abito che porta?
Di belle idee tu fa' che sia lo spirito
adorno, e fra le genti avrai fortuna.
Non basta aver un abito bizzarro
come molti signori, che somigliano
al Leopardo e ch'hanno
tutto il talento appiccicato al panno
e agli orli del tabarro.
