Un Fou et un Sage.

 

Certain Fou poursuivait à coups de pierre un Sage.
Le Sage se retourne et lui dit : Mon ami,
C'est fort bien fait à toi ; reçois cet écu-ci :
Tu fatigues assez pour gagner davantage.
Toute peine, dit-on, est digne de loyer.
Vois cet homme qui passe ; il a de quoi payer.
Adresse-lui tes dons, ils auront leur salaire.
Amorcé par le gain, notre Fou s'en va faire
Même insulte à l'autre Bourgeois.
On ne le paya pas en argent cette fois.
Maint estafier accourt ; on vous happe notre homme,
On vous l'échine, on vous l'assomme.
Auprès des Rois il est de pareils fous :
A vos dépens ils font rire le Maître.
Pour réprimer leur babil, irez-vous
Les maltraiter ? Vous n'êtes pas peut-être
Assez puissant. Il faut les engager
A s'adresser à qui peut se venger.

 

 

The Fool and the Sage. (34)

 

A fool pursued, with club and stone,
A sage, who said, 'My friend, well done!
Receive this guinea for your pains;
They well deserve far higher gains.
The workman's worthy of his hire,
'Tis said. There comes a wealthy squire,
Who hath wherewith thy works to pay;
To him direct thy gifts, and they
Shall gain their proper recompense.'
Urged by the hope of gain,
Upon the wealthy citizen
The fool repeated the offence.
His pay this time was not in gold.
Upon the witless man
A score of ready footmen ran,
And on his back, in full, his wages told.
In courts, such fools afflict the wise;
They raise the laugh at your expense.
To check their babble, were it sense
Their folly meetly to chastise?
Perhaps 'twill take a stronger man.
Then make them worry one who can.

Un Pazzo e un Saggio.

 

Coi sassi un Pazzerello un dì seguia
un Saggio per la via,
che a lui rivolto, disse: - È bello il gioco,
ma tu lavori troppo e pigli poco.
Prendi uno scudo, to'...
(per quanto io posso, amico mio, ti do):
meglio i tuoi conti invece tu farai,
se i sassi tirerai
a quell'uomo laggiù, guarda, che passa
che ha molti scudi in cassa -.

Il Pazzo, del denar tratto alla gola,
prova a fare con lui la sassaiola,
ma questa volta altre monete suonano.
Servi e staffieri accorrono,
lo piglian, lo bastonano.

Mai non manca un buffone
nella casa dei principi, che faccia
alle tue spalle ridere il padrone.
Se tu sputare in faccia
non osi, aizza il can contro un potente,
che sappia bastonare il maldicente.
