Les Oreilles du Lièvre .

 

Un animal cornu blessa de quelques coups
Le lion, qui plein de courroux,
Pour ne plus tomber en la peine,
Bannit des lieux de son domaine
Toute bête portant des cornes à son front.
Chèvres, béliers, taureaux aussitôt délogèrent;
Daims et cerfs de climat changèrent :
Chacun à s'en aller fut prompt.
Un lièvre, apercevant l'ombre de ses oreilles,
Craignit que quelque inquisiteur
N'allât interpréter à cornes leur longueur,
Ne les soutînt en tout à des cornes pareilles.
"Adieu, voisin grillon, dit-il; je pars d'ici :
Mes oreilles enfin seraient cornes aussi;
Et quand je les aurais plus courtes qu'une autruche,
Je craindrais même encor." Le grillon repartit :
"Cornes cela ? Vous me prenez pour cruche;
Ce sont oreilles que Dieu fit
. - On les fera passer pour cornes,
Dit l'animal craintif, et cornes de licornes.
J'aurai beau protester; mon dire et mes raisons
Iront aux Petites-Maisons."

Some beast with horns did gore
The lion; and that sovereign dread,
Resolved to suffer so no more,
Straight banish'd from his realm, 'tis said,
All sorts of beasts with horns--
Rams, bulls, goats, stags, and unicorns.
Such brutes all promptly fled.
A hare, the shadow of his ears perceiving,
Could hardly help believing
That some vile spy for horns would take them,
And food for accusation make them.
'Adieu,' said he, 'my neighbour cricket;
I take my foreign ticket.
My ears, should I stay here,
Will turn to horns, I fear;
And were they shorter than a bird's,
I fear the effect of words.'
'These horns!' the cricket answer'd; 'why,
God made them ears who can deny?'
'Yes,' said the coward, 'still they'll make them horns,
And horns, perhaps of unicorns!
In vain shall I protest,
With all the learning of the schools:
My reasons they will send to rest
In th' Hospital of Fools.'[7]

Le Orecchie della Lepre.

 

Un animal cornuto
col corno offese un giorno il Re Leone,
che per levar fin anco l'occasione
sbandì tutte le bestie dal suo regno
ch'han sulla fronte qualche aguzzo segno.

E cervi e becchi e buoi, capre e capretti
a far fagotto furono costretti
ed a cercar paese più sicuro.
Vedendo anche la Lepre degli orecchi
l'ombra allungarsi aguzza sopra il muro,
temé che qualche inquisitor, per poco
pigliandole per corna,
non le facesse un maledetto gioco.
- Addio, Grillo, - esclamò, - cambio dintorni
per cagion, tu lo sai, di questi corni -.

- Corni questi? - rispose il Grillo astuto.
Per quel che vedo anch'io
son orecchie, amor mio, delle più belle
che sian uscite dalla man di Dio.

- Corni od orecchi, se ad alcuno il ruzzo
o l'interesse torna
di dire che son corna,
n'avessi sulla fronte
meno ancora di quelle ch'ha lo struzzo,
saranno corna, corna da bisonte.
Che giova il protestare? ti si piglia
e ti si porta dritta alla Bastiglia -.
