Les Médecins.

 

Le Médecin Tant-pis allait voir un malade
Que visitait aussi son confrère Tant-mieux ;
Ce dernier espérait, quoique son camarade
Soutînt que le gisant irait voir ses aïeux.
Tous deux s'étant trouvés différents pour la cure,
Leur malade paya le tribut à Nature,
Après qu'en ses conseils Tant-pis eut été cru.
Ils triomphaient encor sur cette maladie.
L'un disait : il est mort, je l'avais bien prévu.
- S'il m'eût cru, disait l'autre, il serait plein de vie.

The selfsame patient put to test
Two doctors, Fear-the-worst and Hope-the-best.
The latter hoped; the former did maintain
The man would take all medicine in vain.
By different cures the patient was beset,
But erelong cancell'd nature's debt,
While nursed
As was prescribed by Fear-the-worst.
But over the disease both triumph'd still.
Said one, 'I well foresaw his death.'
'Yes,' said the other, 'but my pill
Would certainly have saved his breath.'

I Medici.

 

Dottor Nero e dottor Rosa
d'un malato accanto al letto
fra di loro disputavano:
- Malattia pericolosa, -
l'un dicea. - Faccenda seria!
Il malato
per mio conto è già spacciato.

- Al contrario, dottor Nero, -
dicea l'altro, - ed io prometto
di tirarlo fuor del letto -.

Tra due Medici in contrasto
ne' giudizi e nella cura,
il malato, poveretto,
pagò il debito a Natura.

- Non l'ho detto, non l'ho detto? -
esclamava dottor Nero, -
il malato a' miei pronostici
ha creduto più che a voi.

- Grazie tante, - trionfante
disse l'altro, - ma il malato,
se creduto avesse a noi,
non sarebbe mai crepato.
