La Poule aux oeufs d'or.

 

L'avarice perd tout en voulant tout gagner.
Je ne veux, pour le témoigner,
Que celui dont la Poule, à ce que dit la Fable,
Pondait tous les jours un oeuf d'or.
Il crut que dans son corps elle avait un trésor.
Il la tua, l'ouvrit, et la trouva semblable
A celles dont les oeufs ne lui rapportaient rien,
S'étant lui-même ôté le plus beau de son bien.
Belle leçon pour les gens chiches :
Pendant ces derniers temps, combien en a-t-on vus
Qui du soir au matin sont pauvres devenus
Pour vouloir trop tôt être riches ?

How avarice loseth all,
By striving all to gain,
I need no witness call
But him whose thrifty hen,
As by the fable we are told,
Laid every day an egg of gold.
'She hath a treasure in her body,'
Bethinks the avaricious noddy.
He kills and opens--vexed to find
All things like hens of common kind.
Thus spoil'd the source of all his riches,
To misers he a lesson teaches.
In these last changes of the moon,
How often doth one see
Men made as poor as he
By force of getting rich too soon!

La Gallina dalle uova d'Oro.

 

Della seguente favola il costrutto
è fatto per coloro
che, per troppo voler, perdono tutto.

Aveva un certo tale una Gallina,
che faceva ogni giorno un ovo d'oro.
Credendo che la bestia peregrina
chiudesse in grembo qualche gran tesoro,
l'uccise, e aperto il fianco,
la sua Gallina simile trovò
a tutte l'altre che fan l'ovo bianco,
così il suo danno ei stesso procacciò.

Convien questa lezione
a molta gente senza discrezione.
Non son gli esempi rari
di quei che, per la gola dei denari,
della fortuna al gioco
perdono il molto e il poco.
